What is Exercise with Oxygen Therapy?

In the 1960s, a German scientist, Manfred Von Ardenne, was working with cancer patients when he discovered they had oxygen and energy deficient cells. So, he designed a treatment regimen that combined exercise, concentrated oxygen and vitamins and called it Oxygen Multistep Therapy.

We know it today as EWOT or Exercise with Oxygen Therapy. This program is designed to increase oxygen throughout the body and support cellular energy production. Also known as EWOT, Exercise With Oxygen Therapy is an effective training system designed to increase the intake of high levels of oxygen during exercise. EWOT is able to improve oxygen circulation, restore blood flow in the body and increase production of ATP, providing fuel for cells. It can have a tremendous impact on whole body health.

Potential Benefits of Exercise with Oxygen Therapy

EWOT increases oxygenation of tissues and cells and may be helpful in:

      • Increasing metabolism
      • Weight loss
      • Boosting athletic performance

What Medical Conditions Can Be Addressed Using EWOT?

Exercise with Oxygen Therapy has been successfully utilized to treat a variety of medical conditions, including:

      • Respiratory conditions like COPD and asthma
      • Coronary artery disease
      • Cancer
      • Autoimmune conditions like Lyme Disease
      • High blood pressure
      • Mental function
      • Sports injuries
      • Cardiac function
      • Metabolic issues
      • Diabetes

How Does Exercise with Oxygen Therapy Work?

EWOT involves the delivery of concentrated oxygen to the body in conjunction with exercise. Basically, when the concentrated oxygen binds with cells in the body, the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is increased. ATP is an energy molecule responsible for cell function. Concentrating the oxygen in your blood creates additional binding options, and exercise enhances binding affinity.

Over the years, as we undergo stressors (including the stress of aging), oxygen is less and less able to reach the small capillaries surrounding organs and tissues because of improper oxygenation of red blood cells. EWOT saturates red blood cells and blood plasma with oxygen so that oxygen can reach small capillaries surrounding organs and tissues. This decreases swelling and edema and reestablishes your normal supply of oxygen and nutrients.

Oxygen concentrators draw air from the room and compress it until the oxygen concentration reaches 90-95 percent, which is inhaled via a mask or nasal cannulas. This is a significant concentration given that the air we normally breathe is only 21 percent oxygen.

Is Exercise with Oxygen Therapy Safe?

Before using EWOT, it is necessary to obtain a medical history and current diagnosis of any condition being treated. It is possible that EWOT will be contraindicated for use in certain conditions. But basically, if you are deemed well enough to exercise, then EWOT should be perfectly safe for you.

Your One Agora Integrative Health specialist will work with you to determine if Exercise with Oxygen Therapy is a good fit for you.
