      Holistic Acne Treatment

Acne is not just something we all remember from our teen years. Over 50 percent of men and women over the age of 25 suffer with adult acne, and it can continue into middle age.

Women experience adult acne more than men – up to age 45, 12 percent of women but only 3 percent of men exhibit facial acne. For some women, acne persists into their 20s, 30s, and even 40s, with menopause sometimes triggering acne into their 50s and 60s.

It’s essential to understand what is at the root of your Acne in order to effectively treat it. Many people simply try to ignore it – or hide it with concealer. That will only make matters worse. If you avoid treating Acne, it can lead to complications like increasingly severe breakouts, infection or irreversible scarring. Acne can also be a clue you might be suffering other, more serious conditions that require treatment – like imbalanced hormones or serious digestive issues.

At One Agora Integrative Health, we take a comprehensive approach to Acne Treatment by addressing both internal and external factors. Our goal is to uncover and treat the underlying causes of acne, such as hormone imbalances and digestive issues, while also utilizing advanced aesthetic techniques for optimal skin health.

      What is Acne?

Acne is a completely normal – and treatable – health condition. It is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged, usually with skin oil or tissue. Bacteria develops leading to pimples, whiteheads and blackheads. Acne can occur at any age, but it is most common in teenagers.

Various factors trigger it, and certain treatment options will work for some, but not for others, because the causes vary so widely. Medication side effects can cause it, or it might be due to hormone imbalances, digestive issues or exposure to toxins. Though acne is a common medical condition most of us have experienced, individual experiences of Acne can vary widely, as can its causes.

Risk Factors and Causes of Acne

Acne can develop in any ethnicity or gender and at any age. It is most commonly seen in teenagers and women who are pregnant or menstruating. It becomes less common as you age, but adult acne is seen more in women than in men.

Hormonal changes that increase skin oil production - like those that normally occur during puberty, pregnancy, or menstruation - can clog pores and lead to acne. Other hormone-related risk factors that may contribute to acne include birth control pills, endocrine disorders like polycystic ovarian syndrome, and even stress.

Acne can also result from other causes, so it’s important to see a doctor when you experience symptoms. Some serious diseases – like PCOS or severe digestive disorders – can cause Acne. Acne can also be caused or exacerbated by:

      • Certain medications like corticosteroids, hormones like estrogen and testosterone (except when used to balance hormone levels) or lithium
      • Alcohol and certain drugs like barbiturates
      • Skin products, especially oily or greasy cosmetics, hair or skin products
      • Environmental conditions like heavy sweating, humidity or air pollution
      • Specific dairy products like skim milk or whey protein
      • Coffee, tea or other food or drinks containing caffeine, especially sodas
      • Foods or drinks containing artificial sweeteners, or alternatively, high sugar foods or drinks
      • Refined carbohydrates, trans fats, and other processed foods that contribute to high inflammation in the body
      • Family history/genetics
      • Frequent touch, rubbing or friction on skin
      • Medications, supplements or foods that contain high levels of iodine which increase production of sebum

Any condition that causes hormone imbalance or inflammation can also contribute to Acne. It is important to be evaluated for chronic Acne because it can serve as a signal of underlying conditions requiring treatment. Serious complications can develop if untreated, including skin infections and scarring, not to mention its impact on your quality of life at school, work or home.

Darker skin is a risk factor for unique acne complications. People with darker skin types tend to experience more acne complications, including permanent, irreversible scarring and skin changes like hyperpigmentation (darker skin) or hypopigmentation (lighter skin) in patches where the acne occurred.

      Symptoms of Acne

Acne symptoms vary among individuals. Some Acne conditions may consist primarily of painful, pus-filled cystic lesions on your upper back. Other individuals might only have blackheads on the nose and chin. Acne can appear anywhere on the body but is normally found on the face, chest, back or shoulders. They can also appear on the neck, armpits or groin.

Symptoms and severity will vary, but may include:

      • Small red, tender bumps, called papules
      • Pimples, which are papules with pus at the tip, known as pustules
      • Large, solid, painful lumps under the skin, aka nodules
      • Painful, pus-filled lumps under the skin, referred to as cystic lesions
      • Whiteheads (closed plugged pores)
      • Blackheads (open plugged pores)

      Diagnosing Acne

A thorough medical history and a comprehensive assessment of your symptoms can be two of the most effective tools that can be used to diagnose Acne. Put together a list of your symptoms – not simply skin symptoms, but all of your medical issues - prior to your first consultation with One Agora Integrative Health. It’s possible there may be other seemingly unrelated conditions and health problems contributing to your Acne.

Our goal is to uncover the root cause of your symptoms, so we can diagnose and treat your condition effectively. This may require medical testing for an accurate diagnosis. At One Agora Integrative Health, we have a great deal of experience in diagnosing Acne – and a proper diagnosis is the most important puzzle piece in your healing journey.

      Treating Acne: An Inside-Out Approach

Because the causes of Acne will vary, the course of treatment will vary with each individual. Our primary treatment tools will likely include:

      1. Treating underlying medical conditions - Such examples can range from PCOS to hormone imbalance to digestive disorders.
      2. Removing triggers – Medications, supplements, certain foods and drinks, these may all be triggering Acne but once identified, they can be removed.
      3. Assessing and Treating Digestive Health Issues - A healthy gut is crucial for clear skin. We evaluate digestive health and recommend dietary changes, probiotics, and other interventions to support a balanced microbiome and reduce inflammation.
      4. Balancing Hormones - We assess and address hormone levels to identify any imbalances that may be contributing to acne. This may involve lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments, and targeted supplements to restore hormonal harmony.

Since adult Acne is more common in women, it’s important to connect with a team that understands the complexity of female reproductive health and changing hormones. The hormonal shifts that come with menopause can often trigger Urinary Incontinence. Female Hormone Replacement Therapy is the use of Bio-Identical Hormones (BHRT) to balance hormone levels. Certain lifestyle modifications may also be helpful in balancing hormones, as well as a medical nutrition plan to optimize female hormonal balance. Herbal remedies and acupuncture may be good choices for you. Targeted vitamins, supplements or IV vitamin therapy may also be helpful.

If these first-line methods are not effective, there are certain medications and surgeries that may be options for you, depending on what is the underlying cause of your Acne. At One Agora Integrative Health, we can work together to bring freedom from Acne.
